10 reasons why you should join a startup in 2021

This last year has proven that startups are stronger than most would’ve thought. A flexible, innovative, and agile culture has been key when facing challenges such as remote work, massive industry and market changes, and a completely new reality.

Startups’ ability to change and adapt fast has been impressive, not to mention a lot of them kept growing and expanding their teams. If you’re just starting your career, or you’re looking for new opportunities, it’s worth considering joining a startup, here are 10 reasons why:

One of the many perks of being part of a startup is that days are far from being routinely monotonous or boring. This is due to unexpected changes happening around young companies and industries, and the number of tasks to be done as fast as possible. Experiments are allowed to see what works and, more importantly, what doesn’t. If you’re into high adrenaline while getting the job done, you’ll love the thrill of working for a startup.

2. Startup working culture

Working culture can hugely affect our attitude, motivation, and thus, performance. Startups are known for having an innovative and particular working culture. In large corporations, for example, even a simple decision can take time, invoking multiple parties, complex analysis, and great caution. That’s not the case for most startups, as they act as fast as possible and waste no time. Another key factor is the “less is more” and “do more with less” mindset, which will give you the opportunity to explore your creativity.

3. Flexibility

Forget about rigid schedules, strict dress-codes, and useless time in the office. Startups focus more on quality than quantity. This doesn’t mean you’ll work less, it means you’ll work more efficiently. Flexible schedules have proven to help raise employees’ productivity, so has remote working, which is easier in startup teams as they’re more agile and prepared for this new way of working. It gives teams space to worry less about unnecessary things and more about getting the job done and seeing results.

4. New and innovative ways of thinking

Joining a startup means adopting an ‘out of the box’ mindset. Forget about old-school, it might surprise you how startup teams try to come up with solutions and strategies to grow. You’ll find yourself learning and using the most modern and innovative tools and platforms on a daily basis. Also, after being a bit confused by it at the beginning, you’ll start to embrace and speak the startup lingo like a pro.

5. Team

You’re not alone! Startup teams are usually very small, which means they’re very close and aligned, working together to achieve the same goals. You’ll be surrounded by highly hardworking, talented, and ambitious people willing to do the impossible. This is a huge motivation to learn from others and also teach and contribute with your own knowledge and experience.

6. Diverse and multicultural atmosphere

Startups are known to be home to internationally diverse teams. You’ll find all kinds of coworkers, from all kinds of nationalities, backgrounds, and ideologies. This strong multicultural environment can open your mind beyond work and tasks. It also leads employees to have a global vision. You’ll find all kinds of coworkers, from all kinds of nationalities, backgrounds, and ideologies.

7. Startup community

You won’t join just one single startup. As startups’ offices are often located inside of coworking spaces, or hubs, you’ll get to know other teams and professionals from other companies and industries. This is not only an advantage when it comes to networking, but a very fun experience! This can also lead to partnerships between different startups, pushing each other forward to keep growing stronger together.

8. Better than a master’s degree

A startup’s needs are constantly changing, and teams need to be able to adapt and move fast. You’ll develop new skills, and find yourself doing things you’ve never done before, even if it’s not in the job description. Working for a startup, you’ll understand how the whole company works because all teams and departments work closely. This also means you’ll have the opportunity to work and learn directly from C-level and executive team members, which can be better than an MBA.

9. Professional opportunities

Being a startup team member comes with great responsibilities. No matter what your title is, your work will make an impact on the company’s growth and success, this will make you feel like the job you’re doing has an actual purpose and is a huge motivation. Because there are so many things to do, you’ll learn self-management to prioritize your work and get things done.
