German startup montamo has successfully closed a €2.1 million pre-seed funding round led by Project A Ventures, alongside several renowned angel investors. Founded in 2023, montamo aims to accelerate the implementation of the green energy transition by addressing its biggest challenge: the lack of skilled workers. Using a hybrid approach of specialised training centres and digital solutions, the company aims to train people from migrant backgrounds to make a career change to become skilled construction workers in the energy sector.
At the beginning of next year, experienced montamo masters and journeymen will welcome the first career changers to the montamo training centre in Munich. In a highly digitalised six- to eight-week course, the participants will be qualified to install heat pumps and will receive both practical and theoretical instruction.
In the future, montamo will offer installation services in the B2B sector. In the first phase, the company will focus on the installation of heat pumps, followed by solar power systems and wallboxes, among others.
The founders of montamo, Alexander Böhm and Ole Schaumberg, have set themselves the goal of successfully tackling the major issues of the energy transition, the lack of skilled workers in the trades and the integration of migrants.
“Thanks to a strong focus and a high degree of digitalisation, our training courses qualify employees much faster than is possible with conventional training, without sacrificing quality,” said Alexander Böhm. “German language skills will also no longer be an issue for us. Our digital learning platform will be available to course participants in several languages.”
Project A’s Mila Cramer commented: “Germany lacks an estimated 60k workers to achieve the heat pump energy transition goals by 2030 alone, 50% of all blue-collar workers will retire in the next 10 years. To fill this gap, we need innovative solutions that increase efficiency and create additional capacity by training new workers. In Alex and Ole, we have found the perfect team with the passion and experience to achieve this goal.”
According to montamo’s founders, in Germany they are not making enough use of the talent available. With montamo, they added, they want to bring change and people from all cultures together and qualify them for the building trades so that together they can master the energy and heating revolution. With this approach, they are pursuing the goal of becoming Europe’s largest installation platform in the field of renewable energy.
