We are pleased to announce that Eoghan O’Neill, Senior Policy Officer at the European Commission’s DG Connect, will be a speaker at this year’s EU-Startups Summit in Malta. On the afternoon of Friday, May 10 he will deliver a keynote on the EU Digital Markets Act and the opportunities it creates for startups.
Eoghan has been deeply embedded in the EU’s digital and innovation policy landscape for many years. Currently working with the Commission’s team overseeing enforcement of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), he is uniquely positioned to understand this comprehensive regulation and how it aims for fairness and contestability in the EU’s digital markets. The DMA focuses on digital markets where large tech companies act as ‘gatekeepers’ via their provision of ‘core platform services’ such as online search engines, app stores, social networks, and messaging apps. The DMA is one of the most ambitious regulatory efforts to regulate the largest digital companies. It works in complement with, but does not alter, existing EU competition rules.
Using clear criteria outlined in the DMA, 6 gatekeepers have been formally designated. This means they now have new obligations and responsibilities in the EU to foster fairer digital markets. This not only empowers users—for example, through new data portability possibilities—but it also creates opportunities for ambitious startups.
At the Summit, Eoghan will explore the DMA’s implications for market transformation, competition, and the opportunities it creates for European startups and investors in his talk titled: “The Digital Markets Act and what it means for startups.” This session promises to be a timely guide for startups navigating the evolving digital market landscape created by the new regulatory framework of the DMA. Are you going to miss it? Secure your tickets today!
