Principle #1: always put your people first

This quote from Dimitrij clearly shows how vital it is to the success of Finyard he believes their people to be. In the relentless world of FinTech, employee churn, although unfortunate, is something most companies accept as a cost of doing business – but not Finyard.

Instead, there is great importance placed on getting to know each employee, as well as caring about their individual circumstances. Principle #2: intellect and passion trump experience

Experience is always something that’s considered during the hiring process at Finyard, but Dimitrij says that he and other leadership figures tend to give more weight to intellect and passion.

While experience can mean that a new hire is familiar with what they are tasked to do, leading to a quicker uptake in responsibility, it can also lead to people becoming complacent, or unwilling to step out of their comfort zones.

According to Dimitrij, by focusing on hiring people who are inherently intelligent, and extremely passionate about what they do, you can lay stronger foundations that, in the end, propel you to greater heights in the long run.

Principle #3: prioritise interesting challenges over routine

People enjoy creating and promoting interesting and exciting things, whether products, services, or anything else. It’s difficult to be passionate about a project, and give it your best, if it doesn’t interest you in the slightest. 

That’s why, at Finyard, the team ensures that every project they take on, however large or small, poses an interesting challenge to overcome. The company encourages employees to approach projects creatively, promoting out-of-the-box thinking, and offering people complete flexibility as to how they tackle tasks. Principle #4: aim for the moon

This quote from American businessman, William Clement Stone, is one of Dimitrij’s favourites, and one he has adopted at Finyard. The idea is, if you dream big, and set the highest possible goals for you and your team, it will act as inspiration and ultimately lead to success.

The companies that go down in history as “great” aren’t ones that play it safe. They’re the ones that work hard to achieve outlandishly ambitious goals, together.

Principle #5: have fun and celebrate successes

On average, a person will spend roughly 90,000 hours at work during their lifetime. While that may seem daunting when you enjoy what you do, it never really feels like work, does it?

Dimitrij believes this is another factor that has led to Finyard’s success, as hiring team members who love what they do, helps build a supportive working environment, where creativity flourishes.
