This is a fully remote position, but the successful candidate will be expected to be generally available during standard UK and / or Australian working hours.

GIS Specialist

Reporting to the GIS Manager, you will be a key member of the environmental team responsible for the planning and implementation of the Environmental Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) programs currently being conducted by TMC in support of their application for an exploitation contract to the International Seabed Authority expected to be world first!

You will be producing survey data products for GIS data management, charts and reports to support the ESIA and the team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a GIS Specialist to have a significant environmental impact in a mission driven start-up from the early stages.

Primary objectives of role :

  • Creation, interpretation and management of survey data acquired from vessel / USV / AUV / ROV platform, hydrographic survey and inspections.
  • Support the environmental team with GIS services and data organisation (including GIS / CAD charts) to provide the required level of technical support and oversight of ESIA.
  • Provide support in the verification of results and quality assurance of data.
  • Collect, clean, and process data from diverse sources, utilising Python or similar tools for comprehensive analysis.
  • Contribute to maps and other spatial data-driven products associated with the environmental aspects of the ESIA.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of scientific interpretations and analysis.
  • Collaborate with various teams across the business to identify and address data analysis needs, provide guidance on best practice and identify solutions to complex problems.
  • Manage the setup, administration and training of GIS software.
  • Development and maintenance of company / project specific methodologies and charting standards.
  • Identification, acceptance and implementation of new GIS technologies, techniques and practices.
  • Provide ongoing support to the offshore team for the successful outcome of offshore campaigns.
  • Other duties that may arise from time to time which fall within the parameters of this role, for which the incumbent has the necessary skills and competencies.

Qualifications :

  • MSc in a relevant field (e.g., geography, geology, environmental science, environmental engineering, oceanography, marine science / ecology, deep sea ecology, data science) or 3 years relevant experience.
  • Professional experience in a geospatial data role may serve as a replacement for a non-relevant educational background.

Knowledge and experience :

  • Safety and environmental awareness.
  • Previous experience working as a GIS Technician / Analyst, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience.
  • Analysis of large complex data sets and use of data bases and repositories.
  • Experience with site characterisation data and deliverables.
  • Preparation of professional maps using ArcGIS or similar software.
  • Use of spatial analysis tools such as ArcGIS analysis toolpacks or Python libraries.
  • Experienced in delivering data in standard formats.
  • Interaction with online geodatabases such as ArcGIS Online or GeoNode.
  • Competency with Python (or another language) and ModelBuilder to perform analysis on spatial data, data organisation, workflow streamlining and use of GDAL (or similar) will be highly regarded.
  • Experience working with offshore survey projects is preferred but not essential.
  • Experience contributing to complex technical document preparation, editing and delivery.

Technical skills and competencies :

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Demonstrated writing skills is a must, preferably in the form of peer reviewed journal articles.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills, the ability to prioritise in the face of competing demands, and proven success in delivering work personally (and through others) to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, enabling the incumbent to work with all levels and to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to communicate complex data insights effectively to people with non-technical backgrounds.
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Analysis of large, complex data sets, preferably environmental.
  • Attention to detail, as it pertains to data management, QA / QC and execution of technical and scientific investigations.
