At Peony, we are on a mission to build the best consumer computing experience since Apple.

Computing UX hasn't changed much since the 1980s, and we are here to change the game.

Our dream machine is a computer without "computer work" - file management, password management, tab management etc. all the boring stuff one has to do before engaging in any real work.

We want to get rid of them all.

Our strategy is to incrementally launch revenue-generating products that eliminate "computer work" piece by piece, eventually leading to a new computing platform.

The first product we are launching revolutionises file sharing for startups - a.k.a. Docsend killer.

Since founding, we've raised $2M in funding from a stellar network of investors, including the co-founder of Twitter, the founder of Behance and the VC that wrote the first check into Pinterest & Notion.

  • We've spoken with hundreds of teams and individuals and done 5 redesigns to find the best solution to the problem we are trying to solve.
  • We've assembled an 8K waitlist and booked our first revenue weeks into our private beta.

Now we are looking for a founding engineer to join our 2 people founding team to take Peony to 100 customers.

Your mission

Solo ship at breakneck speed and take Peony to 100 paying customers. In this role, speed of execution is everything.

You will :

  • Solo ship and architect product features from idea to production, eventually building your team in 9 - 12 months
  • Provide accurate estimates and sound technical perspectives to roadmap review
  • Ruthlessly prioritise and hit delivery timelines
  • Work tightly with the founding team (product + design) to rapidly launch new product iterations

Cool stuff you'll work on

We are Typescript full stack. Svelte on the frontend. Cloudflare on the backend. Postgres on the database.

You'll do full stack software development and architecture :

  • Unified cloud storage interface that lets users store files in locations of their choice
  • Figma like editor to push the limits of what a folder can be
  • LLM-powered file organisation and file search
  • Mac plugin that lets anyone share any file on their computer with a single click
  • File synchronisation to keep users’ local files in step with remote
  • Version control to help users visually manage their file versions

What you'll need to succeed?

We are under no illusion that this is a challenging role.

To succeed, you'll need :

  • A solid understanding of computer science and commonly used algorithms and optimisation techniques (usually means you've done a CS degree or equivalent)
  • Strong hands-on experience with full-stack development (usually means you've had at least several years of commercial full-stack development experience)
  • Strong knowledge of system design (usually means you've architected complex applications)
  • A track record of delivering complex consumer-facing applications, specifically apps that have open-ended editing interfaces (for example, we consider apps like Figma, Miro, Pitch etc. to fall into this category, whilst eCommerce websites like Tesco or apps that mostly perform CRUD operations like Trello NOT to)

What will make you stand out?

Building a new computing platform is no small feat and we are looking for exceptional engineers to join us on this epic journey.

To stand out, you'll need to :

  • Show evidence of engineering excellence : we are looking for evidence that you’ve done projects that push the limits of engineering.

They can be manipulating complex 3D objects in a browser, rendering large amounts of elements on a single page, tackling a complex canvas-like application, designing a real-time collaborative system, etc.

Or even just doing well at school and getting top of the grade marks for CS.

Or participating in prestigious startup programs like Y Combinator and Entrepreneur First or being an early-stage employee at a reputable company.

Or winning awards for projects you’ve done (even small ones).

  • Get things done at pace : it means that you understand engineering ultimately exists to serve business priorities.

You are laser-focused on shipping and you consistently hit your estimates even under challenging constraints.

It also means that you are a self-starter and can take product features from ideas to production based on even abstract descriptions.

You strive for excellence, religiously measure metrics that matter and constantly improve.

The offer:

  • £90 - 120K salary
  • 3% - 5% top of the market share options
  • London / SF / Remote with flexible working arrangement

To recap - why join us?

  • The thrills of starting a company and taking a significant stake
  • Once in a lifetime opportunity to work on a category-defining product
  • Launch something people want & see your work in action
  • Join a passionate team that obsesses over product excellence
  • Surround yourself with the biggest names in tech
