Over 60% of Gen Z europeans plan to start businesses within the next 3-5 years, survey finds

Apeiron Ventures, a seed-stage investment fund, has partnered with the Gen Z marketing agency Z Link to release a survey exploring Gen Z’s entrepreneurial ambitions across Europe.

The research, conducted with 691 participants aged 17 to 26 during October 2024, spanned 14 different countries, including the UK, Greece, and Moldova. The survey aims to provide a deeper understanding of the motivations and challenges faced by Gen Z entrepreneurs, a group increasingly shaping the business landscape.

The findings reveal that over 62% of respondents plan to start their own businesses within the next three to five years, indicating a shift towards entrepreneurship among the younger generation. This highlights a desire for greater autonomy and career flexibility.

Notably, the survey found that 91% of participants view social and environmental impact as critical to their business goals, reflecting a strong inclination towards purpose-driven ventures. While financial success remains important, other motivations include societal impact (58%) and control over work schedules (57%).

Challenges such as funding, market knowledge, and skill development—particularly in finance, networking, and marketing—were identified as significant obstacles. However, mentorship and accelerator programs continue to be key sources of support for these young entrepreneurs.

Dimitris Kalavros-Gousiou, Founding Partner at Apeiron Ventures, said: “Gen Z redefines entrepreneurship, prioritising autonomy, purpose, and social impact. Many are or will start solo, leveraging AI to innovate with fewer human resources. Their ambitions challenge traditional paths and hold the potential to reshape industries, bringing fresh, value – driven perspectives. Apeiron Ventures is committed to supporting their transformative entrepreneurial journey.

According to Apeiron Ventures, the research highlights the potential and evolving values of Gen Z entrepreneurs, whose focus on social impact and innovative technology is poised to reshape industries.

Apeiron Ventures and Z Link intend to use these insights to develop tailored support systems, including flexible funding options and mentorship programmes, catering to the aspirations of Europe’s emerging business leaders.
