Danish startup ABH Optics secures €1 million to develop ultra-thin eyeglass lenses

Rungsted Kyst-based ABH Optics ApS, a Danish high-tech company and spin-off from Technical University of Denmark (DTU), has successfully closed a €1 million pre-seed funding round led by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF). This investment will accelerate the development and commercialization of their cost-efficient meta-optic eyeglass lenses that offer a significant reduction in thickness for high prescription powers.

Founded in 2022 by Anders Kristensen, Bo Svarrer Hansen, and Henrik Bense-Petersen, ABH Optics has developed a novel type of eyeglass lens using cutting-edge nanotechnology, originating from DTU Health Tech’s projects. With an exclusive IP license from DTU and based on extensive previous research funding from DTU, the Innovation Fund Denmark, and the EU, the company aims to disrupt the traditional lens manufacturing process, which has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Bo Svarrer Hansen, CEO of ABH Optics, said: “This funding marks a significant milestone for ABH Optics. We are thrilled to have the support of HTGF as we strive to bring our innovative lenses to the market. Our technology not only enhances the comfort and aesthetics for those with high prescriptions but also aligns with our commitment to sustainability.”

Olaf Joeressen, Senior Investment Manager at HTGF, added: “We are excited to support ABH Optics in their journey to disrupt the eyeglass lenses market with meta-optics. Their innovative approach to lens manufacturing has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with high dioptre prescriptions, and we see a bright future for their technology in the market.”

The company’s proprietary technology allows for easy customization of lenses, addressing both optical power and structural defects. The result is a product line of ultra-thin, lightweight, and environmentally friendly lenses that reduce plastic usage. ABH Optics targets the 13% of eyeglass wearers with prescriptions exceeding +/- 4 dioptres, who will greatly benefit from the new lens technology.
