Baden-based climate tech startup Crosstown H2R came out of stealth and announced it has raised over €2 million in subsidies and grants from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) and further investors to continue developing its proprietary technology. It also announced partnerships with leading global players Sulzer and Fortum, which will enable gas power plants to shift to zero-carbon energy production for the first time.
Crosstown is a pioneering Swiss technology firm driven by the mission to fast-track the evolution to sustainable energy delivering both disruptive destination technologies as well as transitional hybrid technologies. Crosstown’s technology will be key for eliminating CO2 emissions from new and existing gas turbines across Europe that can extend their lifespans and continue to operate reliably with zero/low carbon for decades. This way, Europe can detach further from the dependence on fossil fuels as well as reduce repercussions from economical and political unrest elsewhere in the world.
Crosstown’s technology enables new turbines to operate at zero-carbon from the offset whilst repurposing and future-proofing the existing infrastructure and turbines. The company has developed the first Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) compliant zero-carbon burner for the gas turbine industry, providing the technology for carbon-free turbines in power generation and more. NOx acts as an indirect greenhouse gas by producing the tropospheric greenhouse gas ‘ozone’ by photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. Crosstown’s tested and proven technology is based on the team’s decades of experience and years of specific low emission and zero-carbon research.

The Crosstown Burner (H2R®) decarbonises gas turbines while ensuring international emissions compliance with ultra low NOx capability. With upcoming NOx regulations in Europe and the US being enforced in 2025 a majority of gas turbines and gas power plants will be non-compliant and will need to transition to new technologies.
A single 100 MW gas turbine emits around 300’000 tons of CO2 annually whilst operating only at 50% capacity. Converting gas turbines to operate on hydrogen (or other low-/zero-carbon fuels) with Crosstown’s technology can remove the CO₂ emissions in those turbines entirely.
Crosstown’s independently tested and proven technology is based on the team’s decades of experience and years of specific zero-carbon research. Crosstown has tested its newest generation of burners passing TRL7 and will be installing into many of Sulzer’s and Fortum’s turbines from 2024 within the collaborations.
