Belgian startup Henchman bags €6.5 million to bring AI to the legal toolkit

Belgian startup Henchman has just secured a fresh investment of €6.5 million to expand. The legaltech team are bringing the power of AI to lawyers, bringing this space into the digital era.

The legal world is one generally characterised by paperwork and manual processes. It’s pretty famous for requiring a lot of back-and-forths, signing of documents, and, is often seen as being quite rigid.

Aiming to change that, bringing the legal sphere into the digital era is Henchman. The startup, which we just listed as a Belgian startup to watch this year, has now secured new investment to scale.

Funding details

  • €6.5 million raised in a Series A round
  • The round was led by Adjacent VC and German Acton Capital and joined by Conviction VC
  • Business angels, including the Founders of Belgian success story, Showpad and Collibra also aprticiaptd

Founded by Jorn Vanysacker, Gilles Mattelin, and Wouter Van Respaille, Henchman aims to tackle a problem faced by lawyers and legal professionals around the world, by giving them access to previously written clauses and definitions.

Nico Wittenborn, Investor at Adjacent VC: “After a few reference calls it became clear that the power of Henchman is how perfectly the product fits into the legal professionals’ existing workflow. It is rare to see a SaaS company win international clients this early in its journey, but the teams’ customer obsession already drove adoption across Europe and in the US. I am excited to team up as we scale to the next level!”

Launched in 2021, the platform offers a contract-drafting tool which intelligently gives access to legal teams’ previously written clauses and definitions. This gives lawyers added value and expertise, and, can be sued to enrich contracts with new suggestions, translations and adaptations. It’s like ChatGPT meets legaltech.

Gilles Mattelin: “When everyone was still talking about ChatGPT, we already started implementing the technology in Henchman.”

The legaltech startup counts some 100 customers across 15 countries and has grown at an accelerated pace over the past year. The team reports 750% revenue growth. With this new funding, the company will continue platform development as well as market expansion.

Jorn Vanysacker: “Today we have the all-star team, the drive and the entourage to maintain our technological lead in solving a global problem.”

Louis Jonckheere, private investor: “The legal profession is entering a new age with AI. I’m very bullish about Henchman’s ability to take a leading role in this transformation. They have the team, technology and traction to become a dominant global player.”

Koen Christiaens, managing partner at Pitchdrive, who led Henchman’s previous seed round adds: “More than a year ago, we saw how Henchman combined a clear product market fit with a very strong and high energy founding team which resulted in many happy new customers. Today there is clear momentum in AI contract drafting and Henchman is ready to conquer the world.”
