Carbon intelligence platform Climatiq raises €6 million to fuel net zero future

Berlin-based startup Climatiq has just raised €6 million to fuel the development and expansion of its climate intelligence platform. The climate tech innovators are powering net zero solutions by providing better oversight into the reality of carbon usage.

United with a common mission of cooling the earth and pushing our planet to a more sustainable present for future generations, Europe’s climate tech landscape is certainly hotting up. Innovative startups from across the continent are empowering businesses, governments and people with more oversight and understanding of the reality of the climate crisis, oh how much carbon we are actually using, and inviting us to make a change for the better by giving us the tools we need.

Berlin-based Climatiq, which launched just last year, is aiming to power the adoption of net zero carbon solutions through open scientific data. The startup has just raised a new capital investment of €6 million as its platform picks up traction.

Funding details

This new €6 million seed round was led by the European VC firm Singular and joined by existing investors Cherry Ventures as well as prominent business angels from Datadog and Snyk.

It comes about a year after the startup launched its carbon calculation platform when it raised €1.7 million in pre-seed financing.

This funding will support the development of the platform and comes alongside an announcement of a Scientific Advisory Board within the startup’s structure. The Board consists of world-renowned, field-leading scientists, including Prof. Mike Berners-Lee, Prof. Shelie Miller, Dr. Jacquetta Lee, Prof. Robert C. Armstrong, Prof. Wil van der Aalst, and Dr. Marco Sakai who will undoubtedly support the startup’s impact-led mission of enhancing climate action data and insight.

Professor Shelie Miller, Director, Program in the Environment; at the University of Michigan: “Transparent and up-to-date data plays a crucial role in supporting decarbonisation across the economic sectors. I’m excited to be supporting Climatiq in creating a go-to destination for transparent data and emission calculations that is open to all.”

Emissions Science as a Service

Founded by Hessam Lavi, Philipp von Bieberstein, and Isis T. Baulig in the German capital, Climatiq is a carbon calculation engine for net zero solutions – introducing a new product that is best described as ‘emissions Science as a Service’.

The platform provides an embedded carbon intelligence solution that enables teams to incorporate emissions metrics into their daily business operations and facilitate better decision-making – empowering more companies to make genuinely impactful carbon decisions.

The Berlin-based innovators take a complex, abstract concept of carbon emissions and data and turn it into a tangible, daily reality that paces the way for more effective green transitions. It enables organizations to embed carbon emission metrics in daily operations and processes which lends agility to climate-positive decision-making.

Raffi Kamber, Founder and General Partner at Singular: “Measuring their carbon footprint is an increasingly important challenge for companies globally, but they still struggle to access the relevant data throughout their products and organizational. Climatiq is building the infrastructure layer of the climate intelligence value chain, starting with the central missing piece, i.e. a global, scientifically-vetted, open database for carbon data. We were impressed by the team’s vision and execution and we believe they have the potential to become the Google Analytics of carbon footprint management.”

The team claims to have built the largest open database of emission factors covering 300 global territories. The data is publicly accessible and covers all major economic sectors including transportation and energy, as well as specific use cases such as data centres, enterprise procurement, and business process mining. Further, the data can be accessed via an easy-to-use API that allows carbon metrics to be built into any software, or for novel solutions to be built on top. The API has been developed for widespread adoption and provides developer-friendly features for automatic mapping, routing, and distance calculations to promote usage.

By making the platform free of charge and publicly accessible, Climatiq takes a more democratic approach to carbon intelligence and is therefore empowering each and every business and person to take control of carbon output.

After just one year of operation, the platform has already attracted widespread interest and has live integrations across more than 700 projects. Now, the plan is to keep growing and actively tackle the climate crisis by empowering organizations across the globe.

Hessam Lavi: “We are excited to be working with a growing number of progressive organizations that are moving away from labour-intensive annual carbon emission reports in favour of embedding carbon metrics into day-to-day operations.”

The new funding will be spent on further growing and refining the database, expanding practitioner access to the latest scientific research, and enabling businesses to become truly sustainable through embedded carbon intelligence.
