From exploring recipes to setting your smart blender via your smartphone, technology is enabling easy navigation through the world of the kitchen. Here are 5 European startups which are bringing back the pleasure of cooking.
Youmiam – Dubbed as the ‘Soundcloud for Recipes’, Youmiam is both a mobile app and culinary social community for foodies. The French startup enables users to publish, share and discover over 20,000 recipes, but also it provides daily tailored recommendations according to your culinary preferences and then helps you cook the recipe via step-by-step slide show in an easy-to-follow visual cooking format on your phone or tablet. If you are not hooked already, you can also follow your favorite cooks and build a cooking social graph.
KptnCook – This German startup is a combination of daily inspiration, a smart shopping list and a mobile cookbook. The mobile app revolves around curated recipe-based grocery shopping with step-by-step cooking pictures. What it does is guide you from recipe choice to shopping, by offering every day three new recipes already paired with shopping lists, containing real products and prices from different supermarkets. Using your location, the app will point you to a nearby store where you can get all the ingredients and start cooking.
Millo Appliances – The Vilnius-based startup takes us to the kitchen of the future with their smart, ultra-quiet and easy-to-clean food and drinks blender. The company is reimagining how we approach nutrition with their magnetic engine, created and patented by the Millo team. What started as a Kickstarter campaign back in 2017, is now a successful startup with total funding of €1.5 million. The smart home product is accompanied by a mobile app, full of smoothies recipes and tracking option for the smoothies produced. Join the waiting list and wait for your blender in Q3 2019.
Kitchen stories – The Berlin-based cooking app was founded in 2013 by Mengting Gao and Verena Hubertz to help you elevate your culinary skills to a new level. The app presents a huge catalog of recipes, available via high-quality videos, easy to follow step-by-step photo instructions and How Tos – in 12 languages. Additional features include a personal cookbook, a shopping list creator, timer, and a measurement converter. In 2017 the startup was acquired by BSH Home Appliances Group and has so far been downloaded 16 million times.
Plant Jammer – For all the vegetarians out there, this Copenhagen-based startup offers an AI-based cooking assistant. They have their trained their AI chef to quickly and easily build recipes based on predefined sets of ingredients already in your fridge and cupboard. As soon as you know what you want to eat, the app walks you through how to go from recipe to meal, step by step. Launched in 2018 and backed by the Miele Group, the startup does a great job in reducing food waste and promoting a zero food waste economy.
