Smart luggage startup Horizn Studios raises €10 million to accommodate the next generation of digital nomads

From Berlin to Barcelona, part of the soundscape is the suitcases with wheels of the Airbnb generation rolling across city sidewalks. Three and a half years ago, Stefan Holwe founded Horizn Studios to create suitcases to match this century’s digital lifestyle.

Founded in 2015 and based in Berlin, Horizn has just completed a new Series B financing round of €10 million from Project A, Milano Investment Partners, and Vorwerk Ventures. With the new funding, Holwe and his partner Jan Roosen have now raised a total of €25 million to become the “Nike of Traveling”.

Holwe, founder and CEO of Horizn Studios, said: “We look forward to this strong round with a well-known circle of investors, and to the overwhelming response from our customers. Both show us that our products hit the nerve of the time. This encourages us to develop more innovative products and services for the next generation of travelers.”

Horizn suitcases are lightweight, with a hard, protective shell, and include an integrated smart charger that allows you to recharge your mobile devices easily, keeping you connected along your journey. Its special 360° spinner wheels seemlessly glide over all types of terrain, are more resistant to wear and tear, and are proven to be more silent than any other wheel on the market.

The startup has expanded its collection to include a range of specialised luggage, from suitcases for DJs, to water-proof backpacks, tote bags, and laptop cases.

Horizn Studios now counts around 70 employees, including engineers, designers, IT developers and digital marketing experts. Over the past two years the company has grown by over 300% – a strong trajectory it expects to maintain through 2019.

So far, Horizn has sold a six-figure number of suitcases, according to Holwe, with its products having been mainly promoted through social networks. Holwe’s first target, he says, is the “creative class” – young, innovative people who create trends that wealthier classes will follow.

Thies Sander, Founding Partner at Project A, commented: “The Horizn team has impressed digital nomads with their products and services, as we see in the growing community around the brand. As an investor from the very beginning, we are very pleased with the development at Horizn, which we will continue to support strategically and operationally.”
