Berlin-based startup Contentful raises €29.5 million Series D for its modern content delivery infrastructure

Contentful is leading the transition from traditional Content Management Systems (CMS) to what it instead dubs content infrastructure. Its approach unifies all content and makes it ready to share and update in a matter of seconds, on multiple platforms.

Founded in 2013, the Berlin-based startup has just raised €29.5 million in Series D equity funding to fulfill its goal of becoming the leading content infrastructure provider for digital teams. The round was led by Sapphire Ventures, with participation from OMERS VenturesSalesforce Ventures, and existing backers including General Catalyst, Benchmark, Balderton Capital and Hercules. The round brings the startup’s total funding to €69 million.

The new funding will be used to further develop strategic partnerships, expanding its Solutions Partner Program to help digital agencies modernise their technology stack for multi-channel content development and delivery. Contentful will also invest in improving its user experience, with tools for optimisation, personalisation, and more.

Contentful’s customer base has been growing over the years, with many Fortune 500 companies, disruptive startups, and top digital agencies adopting its solution. Spotify, Urban Outfitters, Red Bull, Jack in the Box, Lenovo, and Nike are among its most famous clients.

Sascha Konietzke, CEO and co-founder of Contentful, said: “Contentful plays a crucial role in helping enterprises become agile, empowering digital teams with a best-in-class technology stack. This prevents them from being disrupted so they can pursue new opportunities to disrupt the market themselves. With this new funding, we’ll enhance our content infrastructure offerings, further improve the practitioner experience and provide a comprehensive solution for global brands and large-scale organizations.”

Andreas Weiskam, managing director at Sapphire Ventures said: “We’re recognizing a huge shift in the way content is being created and delivered, with legacy CMSes no longer able to keep up with the demands of an agile, omni-channel world. Content is the lifeblood of the modern consumer journey, and we believe Contentful’s approach to revolutionizing the content infrastructure will deliver significant business value for their customers.”
