Internet security solution ZenMate, which ensures privacy and security on the internet for consumers, has today announced record user numbers, two years after being founded. ZenMate, one of our 5 German startups to look out for in 2015, has now reached more than 12 million registered users worldwide with its products, achieving 118% growth in the last eight months.
The growth experienced by ZenMate reflects an increasing global demand for protected privacy online. While 20 years ago computer users relied on anti-virus software to protect against cyber hackers, today, in the era of big data, many people are looking to protect their data not only from scammers and hackers but also from governments, administrative bodies and other companies that want to restrict freedom on the internet.
ZenMate is now additionally offering a new premium version of its VPN solution for a variety of platforms, providing all-round protection for its users against cyber threats. To provide extra anonymity, the new plugin will be available without any registration required. A free version of ZenMate’s security service remains available, however premium users now enjoy more geographical locations, improved speed and additional tracking and malware protection, plus desktop clients for Windows and Mac, enabling all of a PC’s connections to be diverted to a VPN tunnel.
Simon Specka, CEO of ZenMate, stated: “In the last eight months, our user base has grown significantly. The demand for better protection on the internet is especially high in Germany, the US and parts of Asia. We have taken note of that and since our last financing round in September 2014, we have been focusing on expanding and improving the product and our team. The market is growing rapidly and, until now, we had not carried out any marketing activities whatsoever”.
He continued: “Next, we want to build up a marketing team to help establish ZenMate permanently as the market leader in the VPN consumer space. We are also in the process of establishing partnerships with other European security and anonymity companies, so we can work towards creating a European privacy ecosystem”.
Founded in Manchester in 2013 and now headquartered in Berlin, ZenMate offers end users secure and encrypted access to the internet from mobile phones or browsers. Initially launched as a browser extension for Google Chrome, in August 2014 ZenMate released versions for the iOS and Android mobile operating systems, and today serves more than seven platforms.
