British mapping startup what3words raises $500K and launches API

what3words today announced the closing of a $500K seed funding round from prominent angel investors including Guy Westlake, the Head of Marketing at shutl, which will be used to develop new e-commerce applications and other business opportunities. The London-based mapping startup also unveiled its first API.

Launched in July this year, what3words is a free service that grids the world into 3 metre x 3 metre squares, giving each grid square a unique address of just three words from the dictionary. For 99p, consumers and businesses can purchase OneWords to make describing any 3x3m square on Earth even more straightforward. what3words can be used online and via iOS and Android applications.

The launch of what3words’ API will enable third party developers and businesses to build products that leverage the ease and precision of describing locations using what3words’ unique patent-pending technology.
