Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer’s favourite books

Books have the power to transform lives and businesses. With our section “The favorite books of…” we give you a rundown of the favourite books of some of the most successful internet entrepreneurs. Today we’re looking at the bookshelf of Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer:

Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook

Sheryl SandbergSheryl mentioned during an interview with the New York Times that somewhere in that pile of books on her night stand sits a well-worn copy of Anna Quindlen’s A Short Guide to a Happy Life. She said: “I’ve read it before – and I will read it again – and just knowing it’s at my bedside gives me comfort.” Sheryl Sandberg especially likes the following quote of this book: “But you are the only person alive who has sole custody of your life. Your particular life. Your entire life. Not just your life at a desk, or your life on the bus, or in the car, or at the computer. Not just the life of your mind, but the life of your heart.”.

Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo

Marissa MayerMarissa revealed in an interview with littlepinkbook.com that that her favourite book is The Design of Everyday Things by Donald A. Norman. The author of Design of Everyday Things shows how and why some products satisfy customers while others only frustrate them. Marissa stated that she thinks “a lot about design and products and how things should work”. And she finds it “cool to be able to articulate and discuss that on a level that is really accessible and interesting”. Long story short: Anyone who designs anything to be used by humans, from physical objects to computer programmes to conceptual tools – should definitely take a look at this book.
