Rentals marketplace Airbnb partners with Berlin-based media giant Axel Springer to succeed in Germany

The Berlin-based media giant Axel Springer and holiday rental marketplace Airbnb have agreed on a strategic marketing partnership in Germany and a minor investment by Axel Springer.

Founded in 2008, Airbnb is a trusted community marketplace for people to list, discover, and book unique accommodation around the world, online or from a mobile phone. Airbnb connects people to unique travel experiences, at any price point, in more than 19,000 cities and 192 countries.

Axel Springer has become a strategic marketing partner for Airbnb in Germany, supporting Airbnb’s media campaign through significant media coverage across the group’s online and print publications. This partnership could be critical for Airbnb as the young company faces stiff competition from its German clones Wimdu and 9flats.

Furthermore, Axel Springer’s subsidiary Immonet, a leading real estate marketplace in Germany, has become the exclusive marketing and branding partner of Airbnb in the segment of private peer-to-peer short-term lets.

Jens Müffelmann, the Head of Electronic Media at Axel Springer AG, stated: “Airbnb is one of the most exciting and fastest growing internet startups from the Silicon Valley. As a media partner we will support Airbnb’s further growth and success story.”

Gunnar Froh, Germany’s Country Manager at Airbnb, commented: “The breadth of Axel Springer’s media offerings will be immensely helpful as we continue to see record-breaking growth in Germany. We are very happy to have Axel Springer, unrivalled among European media companies in its reach, as an investor and as a close partner in Germany going forward.”
