French beauty box Joliebox secures €1 million to expand across Europe

Joliebox, a new Paris-based competitor to beauty box Birchbox, has just closed its first round of financing (Update – January 2023: The startup seems to be no longer in business under this name and we therefore deactivated the link). Alven Capital and a number of angel investors have invested €1 million in the young startup, which, like Birchbox, offers a subscription model for monthly beauty samples.

Joliebox was founded earlier this year and has already established strong partnerships with 40 big brands, including Caudalie, Lancôme, Laura Mercier, L’Occitane, Bourjois and Kiehl’s. In just a few months, Joliebox has generated more than 10,000 subscribers. This first round of funding will likely be used to expand the Joliebox brand into other European countries soon.

In addition to Joliebox (whose name means ‘pretty box’ in French), there are a few other European players who have also copied the Birchbox model. In Germany, for example, you can find GlossyBox (backed by the Samwer brothers), Kosmetik.de, and Box of Beauty (Douglas).
