Language learning community busuu teams up with Uber to offer drivers a free English course

Uber has teamed up with an Europe’s leading language learning community, busuu, to offer drivers using the Uber app in London a free mobile English language course.

The course is completely optional and includes speaking, listening, reading and writing exercises. busuu has developed bespoke content for Uber to help drivers in specific situations, such as locating the rider discussing the route and delivering customer service relevant for their day to day activities.

busuu is a truly European company and headquartered in London. Founded in 2008 by Austrian founders who lived in Spain at that time, busuu aimst to empower everyone in the world to learn a new language. The company offers audio-visual language courses in 12 different languages enriched with direct interactions with native speakers of the global community. At busuu, every user is not only a student of a foreign language but also a tutor of his/her mother tongue. The first time we wrote about Busuu was in 2010, when we interviewed the founder and CEO Bernhard Niesner, who then also joined us as a speaker at the EU-Startups Conference 2014.

busuu is committed to revolutionize the language learning process with the use of technology. The young company boasts more than 65 million users from over 190 countries and has received several awards such as “Best Education Startup in Europe” and was named as “Best Google Play App 2015.”

Tom Elvidge, General Manager for Uber London stated: “Some drivers who use the Uber app don’t speak English as a first language, but find that their English rapidly improves when they talk to passengers. By teaming up with an innovative app like busuu we can help drivers feel more comfortable when interacting in a second language with riders.”
