Berlin-based social app Amen secures new funding and launches new features

Amen, the mysterious app we introduced you to back in July 2011, has just announced a new funding round worth $1 million, with Sunstone Capital and Path’s Dave Morin. Amen’s previous investors were Ashton Kutcher, Guy Oseary (Madonna’s Manager), Index Ventures and the founders of Soundcloud.

Amen is basically a pretty simple app that lets users express which things, people or places they consider to be the best or worst ever (for example, “Tennis is the best sport ever” or “Ice-T is the worst rapper ever”). The vision of the Berlin-based startup is to build up a valuable reputational database with an addictive and entertaining app.

Bundled with the funding news, Amen also announced a new version, ‘Amen 1.5’, which will be available in the iTunes Store by tomorrow. The updated version allows users to add photos and comments on posts, as well as auto-suggesting Facebook friends and music via the iTunes database. Songs that get mentioned within an Amen post become available as a 30-second preview and can than be purchased via iTunes.

What remains unclear, at least to EU-Startups, is how the Amen team plans to monetize its free app in the short-, mid- or long-term. Since we still don’t now anybody personally who uses Amen on a regular basis, we’re curious to find out if some of our readers use this app. Do you use it? Please let us know, and for those who didn’t get yet what Amen is all about, you can check out the video below:

By the way: You can find out about other interesting startups from Berlin in this list.
