ProSiebenSat.1 invests around €25 million in social dating service meetOne.com

Through its subsidiary SevenVentures, the German media company ProSiebenSat.1 Group has just acquired a 29% stake in the social discovery network meetOne – or as Bloomberg has put it: “The deal values meetOne at about 25 million Euros” (Update – January 2023: The startup seems to be no longer in business under this name and we therefore deactivated the link).

The Hamburg-based team, which was assembled by the founders of gaming success Bigpoint, launched the startup on the German market in the first quarter of this year. meetOne claims to be the first service in Germany to close the gap between social networks and online dating, allowing users to casually meet, chat and flirt. The platform also includes features borrowed from online gaming concepts, for example, employing a freemium model that has been popular in the games business. This means that basic services are offered for free, but more extensive services involve a charge, such as virtual items, for example. According to the young company, meetOne is growing dynamically and has already over 200,000 registered users.

Dr. Christian Wegner, Chief New Media and Diversification Officer at ProSiebenSat.1 Media, stated: “The network impressed us with two aspects especially: its highly successful, international team, and a product that combines entertainment with an innovative business model. We also foresee many opportunities for links with TV shows. So meetOne enriches our equity investment portfolio with another fast-growing startup company that has very good prospects for success.”

Mila Sukhareva, co-founder and Managing Director at meetOne said: “We’re very happy to have ProSiebenSat.1 as an investor. Its involvement, together with our fast-growing list of new registrations, shows us that our innovative product and our business model are attracting high levels of interest. We’re sure that cooperating with the ProSiebenSat.1 Group will carry us a giant step forward.”
