Three specialised startup labs are opened in Germany by GDI.Ruhr

The GDI.Ruhr (Game Development Initiative Ruhr) has recently established three specialized startup labs in the Games Factory Ruhr, based in Muelheim, Germany (Update – December 2022: The GDI.Ruhr website seems to be out of use, and we therefore deactivated the original link).

They’ve opened these hubs to provide an environment where startups can focus on their core business and prepare their market entry. Each of the three startup labs has about 20m² office space with two fully equipped work spaces, with a high-end Acer working station, and offer a state-of-the-art IT-infrastructure. Professional soft- and middle-ware is provided at no cost for prototyping until a commercial publisher deal has been reached. This startup support is enabled by special partnership agreements with Trinigy, Xaitment, 3DPowerstore, Autodesk, Adobe and takomat. Further co-operations are currently in preparation.

The StartUp Package consists of:
– Three 20m² startup labs with two fully-equipped workplaces in each lab
– Rent-free space for a project-dependent time period (likely 6-9 months)
– Counseling and training offers (legal, financial and management topics)
– Close contact with experienced firms
– Professional soft- and middle-ware

Reflecting on his motive to support the GDI.Ruhr and the startup labs, Felix Röken, the  General Manager of game-engine specialist Trinigy, stated that “supporting new entrepreneurs with specialized startup labs in combination with the overall services of the GDI.Ruhr is an exemplary, pioneering and future-oriented approach in the games industry.”

The three startup labs will be awarded in an open competition for the best concepts and business plans. To take part in the competition, applicants need to submit a CV, the business plan and idea, as well as references and/or credits (if applicable).

Application documents will be reviewed and evaluated by a neutral expert committee. The
entrepreneurs with the best business plan or concept will be invited to present their idea in front of the committee. Following the presentation, the committee will award the startup labs to the best applicants. Applications can be submitted via email to: [email protected].
